What Happens in Season 1
David Martinez is a scholarship kid in Night City whose life falls apart when his mother dies and he loses everything. He survives a drive-by because of an experimental Sandevistan implant, which brings him to Maine, a veteran edgerunner who recruits him into a crew of mercenaries.
The crew — Maine, Dorio, Kiwi, Rebecca, Pilar and Lucy — take jobs, make enemies and slowly come apart. David keeps upgrading, chasing the idea that more chrome means more control. It does not. Maine develops cyberpsychosis, the crew is wiped out over a series of disastrous jobs, and David ends up carrying a military exoskeleton called the Cyberskeleton.
The finale is a raid on Arasaka Tower. David dies fighting Adam Smasher. Lucy, who wanted nothing more than to go to the Moon, survives and goes there alone.
What Season 1 Was About
Season 1 is a tragedy about the cost of ambition in a city designed to consume people. Every character is offered a way to be more than they are, and every one of them pays for it. The show's most quoted line — that you should never stop chasing your dreams — is delivered as a warning, not advice.
It is also the reason Edgerunners 2 is structured the way it is. Season 2 opens with a character losing his chrome rather than gaining it, and asks what a person is worth once the upgrades are gone. That is a direct inversion, and showrunner Bartosz Sztybor has described it in exactly those terms.
What Carries Over to Season 2
| Element | Season 1 | Season 2 |
|---|
| Setting | Night City, pre-2077 | Night City, post-2077 |
| Protagonist | David Martinez, new to the life | Weak Kingsley, coming out of retirement |
| Central tech | Sandevistan and the Cyberskeleton | Capri and Project Capricorn |
| Arasaka | Dominant and invincible | Wounded and rebuilding |
| Ending | Almost everyone dies | Most of the cast survives |
The one narrative thread that travels is the name. D's real name is David, which the show reveals in episode 7 and uses as a deliberate echo of the first season's protagonist. It is not the same person, and the timeline page explains what the series actually establishes.
Do You Need Season 1 Before Season 2?
No. Edgerunners 2 is a standalone story with a new cast and a new conflict. It explains its own world and does not require you to know who David Martinez was — though the ending assumes you do, and rewards you for it.
If you want the strongest experience, watch season 1 first. If you just want the new show, start with episode 1 and come back to this page later.
